    Abdullah bin Abdulaziz breathed his last at 90. His half-brother Salman is now the new monarch. King Abdullah ruled the most-influential muslim nation since 1996.
  • Jhumpa Lahiri claimed DSC prize for The Lowland.
    Pulitzer prize winning writer Jhumpa Lahiri has won one of the South-Asia's most coveted literary awards, DSC prize, for her book, The Lowland. She received it from Vijay Shesadri who is himself a Pultizer prize winning poet.
  • Alibaba to be the platform for Indian SMEs.
    Conference of Indian Industry (CII) inks an agreement with Alibaba, China's e-commerce giant, to provide a global platform to Indian SMEs.
  • Facts of the death of Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda to be re-investigated.
    An investigation will be reopened into the death of Pablo Neruda, after 40 years of his death, by the Chile government. This is to ascertain whether he was poisoned by a military dictatorship. The case was closed after his exhumed body was tested in 2013, and the results did not support the claims.
  • Kerala to get 'Chotta ATM' and 'International Institute of Music'.
    SBI partnered with Ezetap has launched Chota ATM, which will allow taxi drivers, kirana store owners, traders, small businessmen to turn their mobile devices into a cash withdrawal point and a credit/debit card payment terminal.
    Kerala is also to open an International Institute of Music. It will be build and trusted by Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his family.

  • Rebels in Yemen to reach a deal with their President Mansour Haadi.
    The agreement between the President Mansour Haadi and the rebels will give the rebel Houthi Movement more say in the country's affairs. The agreement was settled in exchange of Houthis leaving the house of the President Abed Rabbu Mansour Haadi.
  • Ramban - Banihal (32 km) and Udhampur - Ramban section (40 km) to be 4 lane.The center now approves of the four lanes on the National Highway 1A (now NH-44) to make a all-weather road from Jammu to the Kashmir valley.
  • PM launches Sukanya Samridhi Yojana.
    Under the BBBP (Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao) campaign, Narender Modi launched the Sukanya Samridhi Yojana. The parents can open an account for their girl child, who is less than or of 10 years of age, with a deposit of Rs. 1000 on an interest of 9.1%. They shall also enjoy Tax rebates. However, a maximum of Rs. 1.5 lakhs can be deposited in a financial year, under the scheme.
  • Nawaz Sharif government takes actions against terrorist groups.
    Pakistan government banned terror groups Jammat-Ud-Dawa, which is led by Hafeez Saeed and the Haqqani Network.
  • Bibek Debroy became a full time member of the NITI Ayog.
    The noted economist, Bibek Debroy, who has been a Research Proff. at the Center for Policy Research is now a full time member of National Institute for Transforming India (NITI Ayog).

  • The Dragon slows down.
    The Chinese growth rate drops to 7.4% in 2014. This is the slowest growth rate the world's second largest economy reported since 1990. It also missed its official growth rate target for the first time since then.
  • Do Indians lack talent competitiveness?
    INSEAD business school with Adecco and Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) of Singapore presented a report -Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2014. According to the report India ranks 78th out of the selected 93 countries in terms of human talent competitiveness. Switzerland topped the list.
  • Northeast to be empowered.
    'Make in Northeast' initiative to be introduced by the central government. It seeks to promote tea processing, food processing, organic farming and tap the wind power. Besides, it also aims to promote tourism.
  • HRIDAY - An ambitious Rs 500 crore project, launched.
    Heritage Development and Augmentation Yojna which aims at rejuvenating and preserving our rich cultural heritage has been launched. Ajmer, Amravati, Amritsar, Badami, Dwaraka, Gaya, Kachipuram, Mathura, Puri, Varanasi, Vellankanni and Warangal are the twelve selected cities for the scheme.
  • Chandrapur (Maharashtra) becomes a 'dry district'.
    The district is the third one in the state to ban liquor. Wardha and Gadchiroli were earlier declared as 'dry districts' by the state government. Henceforth, all alcohol permits will be shifted to the other non-dry districts.
  • Twitter to acquire a Bangaluru based start-up.
    ZipDial Mobile Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a Bengaluru based mobile marketing and analytics company, is to be acquired by Twitter Inc.

  • IITs and ONGC to come together to make it big.
    PAN-Indian Institute of Technology and ONGC come together for a research and development to develop technologies which would help in exploring and exploiting hydrocarbons and alternative sources of energy.
  • The European Union lifts the ban on mangoes.
    A 7 month long ban on the import of Indian mangoes has been lifted by the European Union.It has been after considerable measures implemented by the country made significant improvements in plant health control and certification system. However, the ban on vegetables persist.
  • H1N1 swine flu spreads panic across the nation.
    Since Monday, several deaths have been reported from different parts of the country. As per reports, seven deaths have been reported from Telangana and it is the state worst hit by the virus.
  • India's tiger population goes up.
    The latest reports indicated a rise of thirty percent increase in the tiger population of the country 
    as compared to the tiger population in 2010. The current tiger count in India is 2226, according to the preliminary estimates in 'Status of Tiger in India: 2014' which is 70% percent of the world's.
  • Kiren Bedi - BJP's chief ministerial candidate.
    Kiren Bedi who is the first women IPS officer has been decred as BJP's chief ministerial candidate and she will stand from the Krishna Nagar constituency.
  • India's growth rate to surpass china's - IMF.
    International Monetary Fund estimates India's growth to be 6.5 in the year 2016 by when it is likely to cross China's estimated growth rate.

  • World Future Energy Summit begins in UAE.
    The four day World Future Energy Summit has begun in United Arab Emirates. The eight version is held in Abu Dhabi and is hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company.
  • Mali declared Ebola free.
    United Nations and Malian government have declared the Mali free of Ebola. The declaration came after 42 days with no case of the disease being reported. The last case was reported on 6th Dec.
  • Government approves new radio channels.
    18 new radio channels in the north eastern states and 15 new radio channels in Jammu and Kashmir have been approved by the government.
  • The censor board gets  a new chairman.
    Film-maker Pahlaj Nilani becomes the new chairman of the censor board succeeding Leela Samson. Leela resigned citing reasons of government interference.
  • Indian-American Frank Islam wins the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Award.
    The award is an apostle of peace and is presented to the entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Islam in recognition of his efforts in civil engagement and international service.
  • Rajni Kothari departed to the other world.
    Rajni Kothari, eminent theorist and political scientist, who was the founder of Center for the Studies of Developing Societies (CSDS) in 1963, a social sciences and humanities research institute, left us.

    Midfielder of Netherlands, Ellen Hogg, and Australian captain, Mark Knowles were named as the player of the year for women and men category, respectively.

  • Petra Kvitova claims trophy in Sydney.
    The world no. 4 claimed women's single title in Sydney International tournament against compatriot Karolina Plikskova. The two players played well but ultimately the tournament's second seed won. The two players had met only once before in 2014.
  • Two Indian banks among the Top 50 most valued banks.
    In the Bloomberg's list of top 50 most valued global banks, HDFC was ranked 45th followed by SBI. HDFC has a total market capitalization of $39 billion while SBI has a total market capitalization of $38 billion.
  • 2014 was really hot!
    As per the two separate analysis conducted by National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2014 is the hottest year since 1880.
  • Advani grabbed his seventh title.
    Indian cueist, Pankaj Advani of PSPB routed Dhruv Sitwala 5-0 at Bengal Rowing Club. HIs was an amazing display of talent. Advani had previously won the title in- 2012, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2005.

  • Polio Immunization program is launched.
     President, Pranab Mukherjee, has launched Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) program. It has been done a day ahead of National Immunization Day.
  • J&K selected for E-governance award.
    J&K government's initiative in citizen-centric Service delivery has got it selected for the National Award for e-governance. Its 'e-panchayat' initiative was a success. The award will be presented in Gujarat on 30th and 31st of this month by the Ministry of Personnel.
  • EC issued a notice to Arvind Kejriwal.
    EC has issued a show-cause notice to AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal for violating Model Code of Conduct. This is in lieu of his remarks defaming BJP.

  • Sensex fell by 120 points but rebounded as it closed.
    Sensex slipped below 28000 level, a fall of over 120 points. This happened despite a continuous fall in trade deficit of the country. However, as the day ended, loses in banks and IT shares were offset by gains in capital goods shares.
  • Reliance Industries profits dipped by 4.5%.
    Reliance industries reported its first decline in profits since April 2014. This fall can be largely attributed to a steep fall in the international crude oil prices which narrowed its refining business.
  • Saina and Mattek-Sands defeat American top seeds in Sydney.
    Saina Mirza and Betthanie Mattek-Sands claimed the women's doubles title of the Sydney Tennis Tournament. They humbled the top seeded Americans - Abigail Spears and Raquel Kops-Jones in just 69 minutes.
  • North-eastern states to be visited by union ministers on every fortnight.
    Eight Union ministers will be visiting NE states every fortnight.
  • Over two dozen terrorist suspects arrested by the European Police.
    Belgium, French, German and Irish police have arrested at least 14 people; other thirteen people were detained in Belgium.

  • RBI cuts interest rates.
    Raghuram Rajan, Governor, RBI; declares a reduction of repo rate by 0.25 percent with immediate effect. A repo rate of 7.75 percent will now prevail.
  • JuD and Haqqani networks to be banned in Pakistan.
    A day after the news of Mullah Faizlullah, Tareek-e-Taliban Chief, been declared as the 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist' by the United States, Pakistan announced its plans to ban ten terror outfits.
  • A hundred crore rupees fine imposed on Riddhi-Siddhi.
    Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued the order for violating RBI norms. It also ordered a cancellation of Riddhi-Siddhi's nominated agency certificate (NAC).
  • BSNL appoints a new CMD
    Anupama Shrivastva is appointed as the new CMD of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

  • Japan to spend $42 billion on defence.
    Japan approves a defence budget of approximately 5 trillion yen for the year 2015-2016.

  • Railways launch India's first CNG powered train.
    Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu inaugurated India's first CNG train on January 13, 2015. This will help the Indian Railways reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • RBI and ECB sign MoU on cooperation in Central Banking.
    The Reserve Bank of India and the European Central Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the field of central banking.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo bags Ballon d'Or for 2014.
    Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo was honoured with the Ballon d'Or for the year 2014. He secured 37.66% votes whereas Messi and Neuer got less than half as much as he did.
  • Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar appointed new ISRO chairman.
    After ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan retired on December 31 last year, Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar has now been appointed as his successor. Kiran Kumar, honoured with the Padma Shree in 2014, would also serve as the Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of Space Commission.
  • RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan awarded 'Governor of the Year.'
    Raghuram Rajan was honoured with Governor of the Year Award for 2015 for his strong leadership during the year. The Central Banking Awards were announced by the Central Banking Publications. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand was honoured with Central Bank of the Year award. The Lifetime Achievement Award was bagged by Jacques de Larosiere (Governor of the Banque de France from 1987 to 1993).

  • Bangladesh gets first non-muslim Chief Justice.
    On January 12, 2015, Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha was appointed the 21st Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He will be succeeding Chief Justice Mohammad Muzammel Hossain who is set to retire on 16 January 2015.
  • Kerala's Idukki district becomes first to join National Optic Fibre Network.
    The National Optic Fibre Network (NOFN), an ambitious government project to offer high-speed broadband connectivity in all the villages in the country, is seeing Kerala's Idukki district as its first member. The government expects to connect 20,000 villages across the country through optic fibre by the end of March.
  • January 12 celebrated as National Youth Day
    This happened in loving memory of Swami Vivekananda, an influential social reformer, philosopher and thinker. The Indira Gandhi-led government, in 1984, had decided to observe the birthday of Swami Vivekananda i.e. 12 January as a National Youth Day every year from 1985 onwards.
  • Microsoft Devices and Idea Cellular tie up for billing purchases.
    The maker of the Lumia smartphones has tied up with the telecom operator to allow Idea's 3.4 crore data users to pay for apps on the Windows Store through their monthly bills or prepaid balances.
  • Elections to the Delhi Assembly announced, capital goes to polls on Feb 7.
    Announcing the much-awaited election schedule, the Election Commission (EC) declared that the assembly polls in Delhi will be held on 7th February and counting of votes will take place on 10th February. With the declaration of the poll schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect.

  • Seventh Vibrant Gujarat summit flagged off in Gandhinagar.
    Pitching for sustainable and inclusive growth, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, inaugurated the 7th Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit 2015 in Gandhinagar. The Vibrant Gujarat Summit is a biennial global business summit, being held since 2003, when Modi was Chief Minister of the state. Over 110 countries are going to be a part of the 2015 edition.
  • Stanislas Wawrinka wins Chennai Open 2015.
    The world number 4 defeated Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia 6-3, 6-4 to win his third Chennai Open Tennis Championship title. He previously achieved the feat in 2011 and 2014.
  • Jaitley adopted four villages in Gujarat under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.
    Finance Minister Arun Jaitley declared on January 11 that he had adopted four villages in the Vadodara district of Gujarat under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana for members of the Indian Parliament. The scheme encourages MPs from both Houses to identify and develop one village from their constituency as a model village by 2016, and two more by 2019.
  • Ban Ki Moon inaugurates 10 MW solar power plant in Gujarat.
    The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, inaugurated Gujarat’s second canal-top 10-MW solar power project, while praising India’s ingenuity and cutting-edge technology.
  • ISRO Scientist gets Vikram Sarabhai Award.
    Director ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Center, M. Y. S. Prasad has been chosen for the prestigious Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Award for 2014-15, the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) announced.
  • Tennis Great Federer claims 1000th win.
    The World No. 2 achieved his 1000th victory at tour level on Sunday, where he beat Canadian Milos Raonic in three tough sets to win the Brisbane title. The right handed swiss' glittering career graph now includes 83 singles titles, with 17 Grand Slams, since his first victory over Frenchman Guillaume Raoux in Toulouse in 1998.
  • Former Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra faces impeachment.
    After her government was removed from office in a coup last May, the former Prime Minister of Thailand has claimed innocence as she faces impeachment proceedings for alleged abuse of power.
  • Oracle gets Thomas Kurian as new President.
    The Oracle Corporation has appointed former Executive Vice-President (Product Development,) as the new President of the company.

  • Sindhushree Khullar appointed CEO of NITI Aayog.
    The newly-formed NITI Aayog, which has replaced the Planning Commission of the Nehruvian era, has found its new CEO in the Secretary of the erstwhile commission, Sindhushree Khullar. Mr Khullar, a retired IAS officer, has been appointed for a period of one year on a contract basis, an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said.
  • UN-SG Ban Ki Moon arrives in India for Vibrant Gujarat Summit.
    The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, arrived at the Ahmedabad city airport on January 10, 2015, ahead of the Global Investors Summit at Gandhinagar. He would be the Guest of Honour at the 7th Vibrant Gujarat Summit, 2015.
  • January 10 observed as World Hindi Day.
    January 10, every year, is celebrated as the World Hindi Day with the objective of promoting use of Hindi language abroad. On this day in 1975, the First World Hindi Conference was organized in Nagpur by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • Electronic Warfare suite successfully tested by DRDO.
    The DRDO has successfully tested an advanced electronic warfare (EW) suite on-board the country's Light Combat Aircraft Tejas-PV1. The equipment is capable of detecting radar signals operating in and around the flight path. It is also equipped with a jammer that can nullify the effect of detected radar threat.
  • Australia emerge victorious in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2014-15.
    The aussies clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after India managed to hold on to a draw in the fourth and last test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on 10 January 2015. Australian skipper Steven Smith was declared the 
    Man of the Series.
